Friends of Potawatomi State Park DDC Challenge Fund
The Friends of Potawatomi State Park Group is excited to work with the Door County Community Foundation and Destination Door County to use their State Park Initiative to help fund the addition of an open-air park shelter and updated parking near the eastern terminus of the Ice Age Trail, at the top of the Old Ski Hill. This new open-air shelter will have an occupancy of 50 people and serve as a new amenity in a part of the park that currently does not have a shelter. The Friends Group Board has discussed this potential project since 2018. In the last year, the Ice Age Trail Alliance has completed trail clearing and rerouted/replaced stairs on the trail, greatly improving the quality of the final few miles near the terminus. Additionally, the Ice Age Trail was designated as an official unit of the National Park System in December 2023, meaning that it now holds the same status as trails such as the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails. The Friends Group Board believes that building an open-air park shelter will be a valuable addition to celebrate this part of Door County and provide a great space for people to gather and enjoy the park.
