For generations, Anderson Dock has stood at the center of Ephraim’s story. Before modern roads connected Door County communities, people arrived by water. Goods arrived here. Families arrived here. Visitors saw Ephraim for the first time from this dock. Over time, Anderson Dock became more than a working waterfront. It became one of the defining symbols of Ephraim itself.Today, Anderson Dock remains one of the most iconic and beloved places in Door County. The historic warehouse that now houses the Hardy Gallery, the colorful names painted across its exterior, the open views across Eagle Harbor, and the experience of gathering along the waterfront have become deeply woven into the identity of this community. For many residents and visitors, Anderson Dock is not simply a place to visit. As many say, “It’s what makes Ephraim Ephraim.”
The Anderson Dock Preservation Campaign is about preserving that experience and thoughtfully preparing it for the future. The Village of Ephraim, in partnership with the Door County Community Foundation, is launching a $2.4 million campaign to protect the long-term integrity, accessibility, and public use of Anderson Dock while preserving the authentic character that generations have cherished. Of this total, approximately $1.9 million will support critical repairs and strategically planned improvements to the dock and surrounding infrastructure. The remaining funds will establish a permanent endowment to support ongoing graffiti abatement and special programming in the years ahead.
Planned improvements include elevating portions of the dock and the Anderson Warehouse/Hardy Gallery to better protect the site from future water damage, rebuilding retaining walls with resilient natural stone, widening sidewalks to improve accessibility, remodeling accessible restroom facilities,
upgrading infrastructure to better support community use, improving dark-sky lighting, and strengthening high-water protections.
These investments are not intended to reinvent Anderson Dock. They are designed to ensure that future generations can continue to experience it much as we do today: as a welcoming public place, a cultural landmark, and a gathering space at the heart of the community.
The endowment component of this campaign is equally important. Anderson Dock is not a static historic site. It is a public space that requires thoughtful, ongoing stewardship. Establishing permanent financial support for maintenance and preservation will help ensure that the dock remains protected, welcoming and cared for long after the current improvements are completed.
As much as Anderson Dock is an active and central part of Ephraim, it is also a vibrant part of Door County, playing an important role in the region’s identity. It is one of the most photographed and recognizable places in the county, symbolizing authenticity, beauty, and sense of place that define Door County for residents and visitors. Preserving Anderson Dock means preserving part of the cultural landscape that makes this community special.
The Anderson Dock Preservation Campaign is rooted in stewardship of our history, stewardship of our shared public spaces, and stewardship of the traditions and experiences that connect generations to this place. The goal of this campaign is not expansion. It is not commercialization. It is not creating a new tourist attraction. The goal is preservation: ensuring that Anderson Dock remains accessible, welcoming, resilient, and authentic for decades to come.
Some places are important because of what happened there in the past. Anderson Dock is important because it continues to matter today. Families gather to watch the sunset. Visitors stroll the waterfront. Couples take wedding photographs along the harbor. Yoga classes meet on the green space. Community events, concerts, and celebrations continue to bring people together along the water’s edge. The Hardy Gallery continues a long and successful tradition of creativity and artistic expression. The names painted across the historic warehouse walls reflect generations of memories, milestones, and personal connections to this remarkable place.
It is one of the defining places of Door County. And with strategic investment and community
support, it can continue to maintain its iconic and connective role within the community.
